Hot new word!!!!!!!!!!!

SWINE FLU

Main article: 2009 swine flu outbreak

The origins of the new swine influenza strain involved in the 2009 swine flu outbreak remain unknown. One theory is that Asian and European strains traveled to Mexico in migratory birds or in people, then combined with North American strains in Mexican pig factory farms before jumping over to farm workers.[32] The Mexican health agency acknowledged that the original disease vector of the virus may have been flies multiplying in manure lagoons of pig farms near Perote, Veracruz, owned by Granjas Carroll,[33] a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods.[34] The strain is a reassortment of several strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that are, separately, endemic in humans and in swine. Preliminary genetic characterization found that the hemagglutinin (HA) gene was similar to that of swine flu viruses present in U.S. pigs since 1999, but the neuraminidase (NA) and matrix protein (M) genes resembled versions present in European swine flu isolates. Viruses with this genetic makeup had not previously been found to be circulating in humans or pigs, but there is no formal national surveillance system to determine what viruses are circulating in pigs in the U.S.[12]

MALE, Maldives (CNN) --
The new president of the Maldives wants to relocate -- his entire country.

Mohamed "Anni" Nasheed, a former political prisoner, was sworn in Tuesday after he unseated Asia's longest-serving leader in the country's first multi-party elections two weeks ago. He inherits an island nation with several problems.

Foremost among them: The very likely possibility that the Maldives will sink under water if the current pace of climate change keeps raising sea levels.

The Maldives is an archipelago of almost 1,200 coral islands located south-southwest of India. Most of the islands lie just 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) above sea level.

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has forecast a rise in sea levels of at least 7.1 inches (18 cm) by the end of the century.

The island was badly hit by the December 2004 tsunami, which killed an estimated 273,800 people and left thousands missing across Asia and Africa.

In the Maldives itself, at least 82 people were killed and 26 unaccounted for from a population just over 270,000, according to the Maldives Disaster Management Center. Sixty-nine islands were completely flooded and a further 30 islands half flooded.

The capital of Male was also flooded, although sea walls protected it from further devastation. The government has calculated that creating a similar barrier around the rest of the country would cost too much. VideoWatch Maldives president vow to save the nation. »

And so the tourist nation, which has white sandy beaches that lure well-heed Westerners, wants to set aside some of the billion dollars a year it receives from tourism and spend that money on buying a new homeland.

"We will invest in land," Nasheed said. "We do not want to end up in refugee tents if the worst happens."

Nasheed's government has said that it has broached the idea with several countries and found them to be "receptive."

Land owned by Sri Lanka and India are possibilities because the countries have similar cultures, cuisine and climate as the Maldives. Australia is also being considered because of the vast unoccupied land it owns.

Climate change is not the only challenge the new president will have to tackle, though. Other thorny issues include rising unemployment, corruption and a staggering drug epidemic.

By some estimates, one of every three Maldivian youth uses drugs.

Maldivians also worry that their tiny secular nation of 370,000 Muslims could fall prey to the reach of Islamic radicals. A bombing in Male, attributed to Islamic extremists, wounded 12 tourists in September 2007.

"We have made many pledges," Nasheed said in his inaugural address. "The citizens gave their majority vote to us to implement these."

Nasheed said he will work to bring affordable housing and medical care for everyone. Twenty-one percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

Nasheed, a 41-year-old one-time journalist, was among the fiercest critics of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who came to power in 1978 and ruled the Maldives for 30 years. He won the six previous elections as the only candidate on the ballot.

Nasheed contended that Gayoom ruled with an iron fist, crushing dissent, amassing wealth and stacking his administration with friends and relatives.

Gayoom's critics say his government enforced a system of 'apartheid' tourism that banned most Maldivians from nearly 90 luxury resorts.

Shortly before election day, an auditors' report said that millions of dollars were improperly accounted for by Gayoom's government. He disputed the findings.

Nasheed was arrested several times in the last 15 years and held as a political prisoner.

Five candidates challenged Gayoom for presidency in elections held on October 9.

Gayoom said he needed a seventh five-year term to see through the reforms he put in place. But critics said Gayoom instituted democratic reforms -- and legalized political parties -- only after violent protests in 2004 and 2005.

Nasheed and Gayoom ended up in a runoff -- with Nasheed winning 54 percent of the votes to Gayoom's 46 percent in the October 28 race.

"No other citizens in the world in modern times have changed a 30-year-old regime so peacefully," Nasheed said in address.

As the clock struck 12 a.m. Tuesday, Gayoom quietly exited the presidential office.

"I deeply regret any actions on my part ... (that) led to unfair treatment, difficulty or injustice for any Maldivian," he said in a farewell speech.

"From anyone who had had to face any such unfair treatment, difficulty or injustice, I sincerely seek forgiveness."

Maldivians took to the streets in a celebration that carried into the wee hours of the morning. Residents danced to the beats of local bands and feasted on rice and mutton.

They decked the cobbled roads of Male with the red-and-green flag of the Maldives and the yellow banner of Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party.

"We cannot believe that this is happening. I have spent more than half my life in exile in Sri Lanka," said Nasheed's close confidante Mohammed Naseem.

Number of Foreign Policy Issues Will Test Next President From the Start

American President-Election Barack Obama faces a long list of foreign policy issues when he takes office on January twentieth. Two wars. Nuclear worries over Iran. The threat of terrorism. New tensions with Russia. These are in addition to a financial crisis.

Barack Obama in Chicago on Friday at his first news conference as president-elect
On Tuesday, Mister Obama won a solid election victory to become America's forty-fourth president, and first black president. World leaders sent their congratulations, including the president of Iran.

But Russian President Dmitri Medvedev announced plans to put missiles near Poland. He said they would be used, if necessary, to neutralize an American missile-defense system proposed in Poland and the Czech Republic.

The Bush administration says the system is needed to defend against missiles from countries like Iran, and is not aimed at Russia. The State Department's top arms control official expects to discuss new proposals to ease Russian concerns later this month in Moscow.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived Thursday in the Middle East in an effort to continue the peace process begun a year ago. Israeli and Palestinian officials have set a goal to reach a peace agreement by the end of this year. But that now appears unlikely as Israel prepares for new elections in February.

In his acceptance speech Tuesday night, the president-elect promised a "new dawn of American leadership."

BARACK OBAMA: "To those who would tear this world down -- we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security -- we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright -- tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope."

During the campaign, Barack Obama called for withdrawing American fighting forces from Iraq within sixteen months in office. Iraq and the United States have struggled to negotiate an agreement to govern the presence of American troops after this year. The Bush administration has just sent what it says is a final version for the Iraqis to approve. The proposed agreement would let American forces remain in Iraq for as long as three more years.

Mister Obama wants to send more American troops to deal with growing threats in Afghanistan. But Afghan President Hamid Karzai called on Mister Obama to end civilian casualties. "We cannot win the fight against terrorism with airstrikes," he said. And Pakistan called for an end to missile strikes in its territory.

This election has received a huge amount of attention in the United States. In fact, some people said it felt like the world was voting for Barack Obama. But the proudest celebrations took place in Africa. Mister Obama's father was Kenyan and he has family members who live in that country. Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki declared Thursday a public holiday.

And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. I'm Steve Ember.

China, Taiwan envoys sign trade pact

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) --

Taiwan and China set aside decades of hostilities Tuesday and agreed to expand flights and allow shipping links across the Taiwan Strait -- a potential hotspot that ha
s long threatened to become a war zone.

The historic deal highlighted the dramatic improvement in relations in the past half year between the rivals that split amid a bloody civil war in 1949. They agreed Tuesday to hold high-level talks every six months and focus on building closer financial ties in the next round of meetings.
After signing the pact, Chinese envoy Chen Yunlin smiled and shook hands with his Taiwanese counterpart, Chiang Pin-kung. They sipped champagne and held up two lines of framed calligraphy that said, "Peaceful negotiation creates a win-
win situation."

The drastic warming in relations began after Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou was elected in March, pledging to ease military tensions and forge closer economic ties with China.
Ma's predecessor, Chen Shui-bian, was vilified and shunned by Beijing because he leaned toward independence during his eight years in office. China has repeatedly warned that Taiwan has two choices: eventual unification or a devastating attack.

Ma's Nationalist Party has long supported eventual unification with China -- a
policy that has helped the new president win Beijing's trust.

Tuesday's sweeping pact allows direct shipping links across the Taiwan Strait for the first time since the civil war.

The deal also expanded the number of weekly passenger flights from 36 to 108. Cargo flights would be allowed for the first time, with 60 crossing the strait each month.
The rivals began relaxing restrictions on flights in July when their envoys met i
n Beijing. They signed a deal that would allow flights from five mainland cities. Tuesday's agreement allows planes to take off from a total 21 cities.

CO-Q / Young Taiwan Artists From Nobody Collection

Young British Artists From The Saatchi Collection。
“Young Taiwan Artist From Nobody Collection”

Start from sensation on the landscape , Project the mirage on the reality of Taiwan

Young British Artists From The Saatchi Collection。
“ Young British Artists From The Saatchi Collection” wrote on the cover of Sensation, an exhibition which made YBA well-known at 1997.

A group of young artists were noticed through the Saatchi’s over-hype issue , and it is a “history of art” nowadays.

A giant strawberry jelly, The Gelatin Age, fell on MOCA in 2008, the time of China Politic Image bubble. A group of Chinese young artists born in 1980s were named for “Jelly” sociological by Zhang Qing, the curator of this exhibition.
The art field in Taiwan has started to discuss the issue of young age and named it “muttering” since 2003. Until recently, people just care about the name but the action.

However, what makes me confused is that the art filed just mutters . We have talked a lot issues and appealed people to critic the young frustration beside the politic and art.
Whatever we left behind the Young Age except the critical logic ?

“Young Taiwan Artist From Nobody Collection”

“Young Taiwan Artist From Nobody Collection” responds to the exhausted land and the plight that we can’t escape whatever we say. In this boring art filed, mirage which is the only way to wrest minute space for young age to breath and create under the critical system of politic and muttering , the difference between the gallery business and freedom of creature. academia and business can’t assure both the freedom and image of art which exist in the space.

To be a member f Young Age, I must induce a calling for my generation by planing a exhibition. CO-Q can’t stand for the young age in Taiwan. At least, it is not a given name from the elder generation!

RAY band

尤其他們cover cocaine 還有the sky is crying, black magic woman的時候,每次一推弦,就會讓人起雞皮疙瘩
